Bird in Hand’s sustainability program begins in its estate vineyards and extends through the winery, restaurant, kitchen garden, grounds and waste-management practices. The estate vineyards and gardens have eliminated synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and insecticides, while vineyard and garden inputs—including fertilisers—come from organic sources.

Biodiversity is actively encouraged through the return of native grasses beneath the vines and the promotion of healthy insect populations. Water-conscious initiatives include upgraded drip irrigation and mulching in higher parts of the vineyard to reduce water use.

At the winery, a 110kW solar system supports operations. Winery wastewater is collected, treated and reused onsite, while plastic, cardboard, paper, bottle caps, glass and scrap metal are recycled. Organic grape residue is also redirected to facilities that create useful products such as spirits, tannins and tartrates.
